Connecting with Canadians

The Demographic Crunch: A Win-Win Opportunity

by Ron Saunders

Canada's labour market is experiencing some trends which on the surface appear to be contradictory. We see labour shortages in many sectors, especially in Alberta where the booming oil and gas industry seems insatiable in its need for workers. These shortages can only get worse as baby boomers reach retirement age over the next decade. But at the same time, unemployment is unacceptably high in many communities. In this essay, the Director of CPRN's Work Network, Ron Saunders, makes the case for helping under- and unemployed Canadians to reach their full potential – at the same time, providing the economy with the skilled workers it demands.
